Under the leadership of Lord Professor Dr Anton Jayasuriya, OIUCM have conducted intensive clinical training programs for various forms of complementary medicines under the United Nations theme "Health For All By The Year 2000". More than 30,000 students from some 140 countries have been conferred degrees from the OIUCM, since its constitution as a privately funded postgraduate university in March 1988.

OIUCM with the affiliation of Medicina Alternativa International Institute, an international organization formed in 1962 to correspond with the policy objectives of the World Health Organization (WHO), have instituted training, symposiums and world congresses in five continents and over hundred countries in the past few decades.

The Open International University for Complementary Medicine (OIUCM) has been an educational foundation that has provided clinical training, accreditation and certification to clinicians, physicians and therapists of alternative medicine from all parts of the world.

This formidable affiliation also established procedures and regulations outlining the Code of Ethics that health care workers including physicians, nurses, midwives, etc are expected to follow, in accordance to the WHO guidelines
